Digestive issues take many different forms, and have many different causes. Often, they are associated with a cascade of ongoing inflammation that is constantly being re-irritated by a variety of different elements, including inflammatory foods, potential allergens, pesticide residues, anxiety, and stress. The diagnoses of digestive issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and reflux (GERD) have many different variables in action, but often share common themes of inflammation and immune imbalance.
Naturopathic medicine works to investigate all of these root causes, and the solutions are as unique and variable as each person’s biochemistry. We start with nutrition first, using food as medicine to determine what changes we can make to reduce inflammatory foods, increase nutrient-dense foods, and identify allergens and specific irritants. There is no single diet that works for everyone. By working together, we look for nutritional changes that make a positive impact and are sustainable lifelong habits.
We also work with elements that are soothing and healing to the digestive tract, to begin to repair the inflammatory damage and restore the integrity of these tissues. These include a variety of amino acids and healing herbs. Other elements, such as specific digestive enzymes, help us restore digestive function so that foods are being broken down properly and nutrients can be absorbed. Pre-biotics (the fibers that serve as food for probiotics) and probiotics are also a part of this restorative process, choosing particular strains at appropriate times to further enhance digestion, reduce inflammation, and balance the immune response.
Not least (and often not last, either), we address anxiety, mood, and stress. Naturopathic medicine works to support the whole person, and we know that stress plays a direct role in our overall health and disease processes. We investigate your stress factors, and look for ways to build resiliency to these stress factors. This is also highly individualized and takes many forms, from prioritizing sleep and getting more motion, to herbs that support our pituitary and adrenal response and embarking on intentional nature therapy. Supporting ourselves during stress is a lifelong journey.
This individualized approach to digestive repair requires a long-term partnership, and takes time to implement each of these steps in turn. It is my privilege to help guide you through these steps and the process of finding the answers that work for you.
